Great idead here - just been reading through all your previous answers. I have dermatitis and get dry/sensitive skin. My clarisonic is doing an amazing job as a whole, but aggravates dermatitis round my nose. Can you recommend a change of cleanser as well as avoiding the area? Thanks :-)
I'd need to know what cleanser you are using but I would firstly say go easy with the Clarisonic on that type of skin. I would drop usage to a couple of times a week and use a non-mineral oil based cleanser. The nutribeauty website has a couple of lovely ones - and as always - Emma Hardie for evenings and a gentle wash for mornings.
Hello Caroline, I have the craziest type of skin and I just don't know what to do with it! It breaks out very easily (sometimes with just pimples and very often cystic spots)and it is sensitive and reactive. I have had more of a problem since I went on and then off the pill. Now I have stabilised my hormonal issues but the spots (and blackheads) remain. The only thing that seemed to help a little was vit. A by Alpha H but I ran out. I am willing to buy it again, but I don't want to spend all that money again, if there's something better for me in the market. Could you roughly suggest a regimen and some products for a skin like mine please? I tried washing with a cloth but my skin got all red and sensitive for days. It also feels very dehydrated at the moment. It's too much to ask I'm sorry, but I'm really miserable at the moment with the state of my face and I could really use your help. I value your advice a lot. Thankyou.
What are you washing your face with? Definitely try the Clarins Blue Orchid Oil for dehydration at night, cut out sugar to stop the inflammation in the meantime and let me know what else you are using on your face!
I am using Dr. Weil for Origins as a morning cleanser and I follow with the same serum and lotion. At night I use Neutrogena's 2in1 visibly clear wash and mask to unclog the pores and again follow with Dr. Weil's serum and lotion. I also use a clay mask by liz earle, origins pads brighter by nature, liz earle light lotion and triple oxygen cream by bliss whenever I need them. This routine has worked for me for about a month and gave me a totally spot-free face. Also, I rarely get dehydrated like this and I'm sceptical about using product that target dehydration because they break me out. Thanks x
It sounds like you have a lot going on. I would avoid the harsh exfoliators - especially Neutrogena - these are what are dehydrating you. I would aim to treat the skin with an oil at night - if you are uncomfortable buying something for dehydration use the combination one - but you def need to calm down the exfoliating. Your skin is trying to tell you its angry with you. :) Use dedicated spot treatments, clay masks JUST on the spots, and try products with Hydra in the title. Water based. Let me know!
I only got the dehydration when I used a flannel at night (maybe I rubbed too hard?!). My main problem is acne and breakouts and also the fact that I never seem to keep my skin stable. So I will use hydrating products, cut down the sugar (ouch!) and exfoliation and then stop by next Thursday to get more advice about specific products! Thankyou so much for your time!
Hi! Before I start, I must say that I LOVE YOUR BLOG! I have combination skin with breakouts and the only thing that seems to have calmed it is liz earle and retin A. I was just wondering what moisturiser would be good for my skin type as it tends to go flaky around my cheeks, but oily at my nose? Where do you recommend for a facial in London and in particular, one who is good at extraction? Thanks!!
Try Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream and the Clarins Lotus oil at nighttime underneath it if its really dry in areas. How much do you want to spend on the facial? ££
Anywhere up to 100 pounds? Would be great if it could be cheaper! Thanks so much! Was thinking about the clarins oil and this definitely pushed me towards it!
The Suti facial is lovely - she's in Barnes - I've posted about them before. I'm REALLY wary who I let extract on my skin - and the people I know are much more expensive (I can't afford them either!) :) Let me tweet out and see what I get back.
Hello Caroline! Fabulous idea for the clinic. One small question, my skin is pretty average, neither dry or that oily. But under my left eye i have a dry patch, under say a 1cm, teeny tiny! It looks slight scaly (ew) and with concealer it look pretty rank. When applying my brightening by Orgins eye cream its stings and goes a bit red, never ever had anything of the sort. Been applying Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream and Troligy Rose Hip Oil every other night - is the way forward?
Saw you at ZOMG! i was the girl giving you massive grins across the room - sorry for smiling like a creep! xxx
You should have said hello!!! And I should have worn my glasses! I probably didn't even notice you were smiling - blind. Sorry! :)
It sounds like eczema to me - which is why the Origins stings - they use essential oil as fragrance - which is lovely on some and OW on others..
The trilogy is good for scarring and healing so will help but you could also buy some Vit E capsules from a pharmacy, split one and apply one a day am and pm directly to the area for nourishment. And when it does flares up mash up a teeny bit of avocado and apply it directly. Makes you want to eat guacamole but does cool and soften. :) If it spreads or persists Wild Rose Beauty Balm from Neals Yard is AMAZING. You can use it as a barrier cream, a mask, a cleanser or an overnight treatment. Its around £35/38 but will last for years.
hello , this is such a fab thing your doing and I'm grateful for any advice given , so here's my problem, I'm 43 still oiley and making blackheads and still getting spots , I've poured myself over your blog so I think I doing the right things , could you please recommend cleanser and moisteriser and eye cream , I've been on environ and hydropeptide face cream and a little liz earle, I have pco so hormones are a problem , any suggestions and advice are really welcome and thanks for your time & help xxj
If you have PCO you have a slightly longer term problem than most as they don't always come to a head so focus on keeping inflammation down and controlling the scarring. Environ depends on which product you've been using. It could aggravate if the cysts are open. Cleanser as always - non mineral oil balm - Boots Organics make one - right up to Emma Hardie. Smell them first though. If they smell TOO strong to you the fragrance may irritate. Eye Cream - alpha h Age Delay eye and lip is nice for 'our' age and not too ££ :) Moisturiser depends on what you can afford. Stay away from mineral oil. You could try Fresh Soy range. The problem is its only available in Marylebone High St store If you can't get there - try Clarins Lotus oil for night. And you can keep with the environ if its anti-aging and not too Vit A heavy? Let me know
I'm using emma hardie (beauty box) , got liquid gold but will get eye cream ( have a toddler who hates sleep) , and clarins lotus oil..... so grateful for that your a star xx
Hi thanks for a fab post. I have a question about acne scarring. I have a very uneven skin tone due to previous acne but if I am still very prone to breakouts. I was wondering if there was any serums or creams that you would recommend for uneven/scarred face?
A couple of things. Kate Somerville Detox Daily Cleanser (SpaceNK) helps repair scarring as well as prevent new spots. HEAL - available at Victoria Health http://www.victoriahealth.com/product/Heal-Gel/6171/0/ is great for scarring and made by plastic surgeons. They should know! :)
Hi can you recommend a budget-conscious serum/treatment for 39 year old tired skin? I have very oily skin but I control it with oil-control films. Love the blog! Thank you!
The 'oil control film' is just those clean & clear ones - like the white papers that you press on your fact to absorb the excess oil (sorry for the awful description).
I cleanse by using either Liz Earle C&P or No7 Age defence and a flannel rung out in hot water... is that too harsh?
Switch to Boots Organics Cleansing Balm or Emma Hardie if you can afford it. And control the oil with oil suitable for a combination skin. Decleor, Darphin and CLarins all make them. The flannel is fine. But under a tap yes, not fill the sink with water?
Actually I HAVE the Emma Hardie, which I sort of 'keep for every now and then' which is probably a bit silly thinking about it! I will try using it alone and see how I get on. I've always been nervous of oil since I tried the OCM and developed spots everywhere! but I love the feel of oil on my skin and I've got to try SOMETHING to sort out the over-production!
Since starting to read your blog I DO rinse my flannel under running water, yes but I didn't used to :)
Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question :)
Oh God. I'm not sure the world is ready for a video of me shouting at them. But I've had the request numerous times before so will definitely bear it in mind! :)
Hi Caroline Am loving this whole Thursday clinic idea, Thankyou! Just wondering how to tackle bumps under the skin, namely on my acne-prone chin. Am not suffering so much with breakouts, just these painless ugly little bumps/occaisional blackheads. I exfoliate once a week with a "scrub" type exfoliator, deep cleansing mask after, and use liquid gold 3 nights a week (when I dont use scrub), I cleanse twice daily with clarisonic + avene cleanance (sometimes use vichy normaderm, liz earle c&p), moisturise with avene or vichy. Help please!!
I think you're over cleansing. Clarisonic 2 x day with a cleanser like Cleanance is a routine for bad bad skin. I'm not sure I would ever recommend that tbh. Judging by their location they're hormonal - that would also be why they are sporadic and not continuous. I would take flax oil capsules (starting now as they will take up to 3 months to 'kick in'), I would buy a toner for that area and use a different product at night for the chin area when you're not Liquid Gold'ing. :) As above an oil for combination skin is really good as it nourishes an area that we tend to think needs 'drying out'. Sometimes suffocating the spot with healthy oils (if you know what I mean) works beautifully. Let me know!
Hi, Can you suggest a good moisturiser for skin that is dehydrated. Products for dry skin are too heavy and I break out, products for oily skin are either not moisturusing enough or too harsh x
Use products that have 'hydra' in the title - meaning that they are usually water based - not oil based. Clarins and Alpha H do hydra products - check the ingredients. Main ingredient will be water - not an oil or butter. And again - the Clarins oil for dehydration as above - is lovely! :)
Thankyou ! I have just ordered a Caudalie moisturiser ( the vinosource sorbet one). I have tried Alpha H but it broke me out, too harsh for me I guess. Hydra will be my mantra from now thanks very much x
Hi! I'm currently using Liz Earle Products (Cleanser, toner and moisturiser) and using their clarifying mask once a week and their exfoliator every 3-4 days, but I've still got such clogged pores! I've had them for a while and it makes my skin texture horrible, I was wondering what I can do to help with them? I have combination skin that's a bit dehydrated (I do drink a lot of water everyday!) and acne prone. Thankyou so much!
Up the ante to an oil based cleanser (non-mineral oil)and I would consider using a topical exfoliator like the aforementioned Alpha-H Liquid Gold. THAT will sort your texture out and help the acne. Switch to Avene or Le Roche Posay - available in big chemists and huge range of products between them.
So firstly Oilatum and ANR - ditch. Get a balm - Darphin Purifying Balm is heaven on earth - for nighttime to alternate with Liquid Gold. Get a good clay mask. Use it on the blackheads when you use the Origins mask on the rest of your face. If you're doing that and they are persisting, I would take flax oil supplements - which are kinder for breastfeeding than fish oil. No-one needs fishy milk! Lamberts are the best supplements.
1. How do you feel about cleansing oils, like the one from DHC (an olive oil base with emulsifiers). I've tried it once and it brought up oil clogs to the surface and I can actually pick them out with a tweezer! My skin is dehydrated and slightly dry, a little sensitive and a little clog prone. Do you think it's a good idea for me to use cleansing oils as a makeup remover?
2. How does one use topical retinods? I use Differin gel 0.1% but I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to use it before/with/after moisturiser at night! Currently, I just mix it in with my moisturiser.
1. Cleansing oils absolutely - just non-mineral oil ones. I love oil as a MU remover. 2. Retinoids - before moisturiser or instead of - although that depends on your skin type because it can dry you out. But before - moisturiser on top.
1. How do you feel about cleansing oils? I've tried the one from DHC with olive oil base and emulsifiers as a pre-cleanser/makeup remover. It brings all my oil clogs to the survive so that I can remove them by massaging/squeezing them out with fingers. Do you think it's a good idea for me to continue using this cleansing oil? I'm scared of oil cleansing in general. My skin is normal but slightly dehydrated, slightly sensitive and slightly clog-prone.
2. Is it bad to wear makeup everyday? I double cleanse at night but I always wonder if it's better for me not to wear makeup daily. My makeup isn't the super long-wear type but is silicone based liquid foundations. Is it ok if I cleanse throughly at night?
3. When should I use topical retiniods? I use Differin 0.1% gel everynight. Should I apply it before/with/after moisturiser?
Good morning Beauty Mouth love your common sense, my skin is very dehydrated at the moment.I have combination skin i am using clarins hydroquench serum, but the hydroquench cream i am using is not working skin still feels tight.Any suggestions for a cream or lotion to take away the tightness, not to thick need to apply make-up joy x
How are you washing your face? Those are good products. They should not leave you tight. If you're tight you're probably dry in areas as opposed to dehydrated. Why do you say you are combination? More details please! :)
Hi Bm I am using Emma Hope cleansing balm, my skin is quite oily in the T-zone pores are visable cheeks dry. This has just happened in this last fortnght that skin is tight, any advice welcome. joy x
Morning BM My skin is oily in the T-zone pores visable, i am using Emma Hope clensing balm.My skin is normally fine, but the last fortnight it feels tight, very thirsty moisturizer sinks in then left with tight feeling. Any advice would be helpful joy x
I know its friday so i'm not expecting an answer soon but wondered if you could please advise. I am 36 and pretty happy with my skin generally, use emma hardie cleanser (on your advice) or liz earle when not feeling so flush, argan oil, Ren frankincense night cream and sarah chapman eye cream. I have a 7 month old baby, my 3rd child who has basically stopped sleeping! I am EXHAUSTED, and its starting to show on my face, can practically feel the wrinkles multiplying daily.
Can you recommend any hero products for eye or face that will help, will spend on something effective and long lasting. Or any supplements? I take zinc, C, D and omega 3?
Any advice gratefully received - sorry for poor punctuation, baby feeding as i type...
Supplements - Floradix is brilliant. And I would say give yourself a real break at night and use something like Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm which is my go-to when I just want to collapse. Put some on as soon as you are in for the night and reapply a second layer before bed. If you can afford it Beauty Works West make supplements called YOUTH - they are £64.00 - but I swear I have seen a difference in my energy levels and general well-being. Google them - they've had good results for others too. But as a starting point - Floradix and Neals Yard.
(Complete disclosure - I do some work with BWW but would NEVER recommend if I didn't fully believe in them.)
Hello I'm 32 years old with combination skin, lots of blackheads and large pores on my cheeks and nose. I dont strictly follow a skincare routine except when I'm wearing make-up. Currently I am using Decleor 3 in 1 Hydra-radiance cleansing mousse without the muslin cloth followed by Oil of Olay night cream. Would you please suggest something to help with my blackheads and pores? Thanks
Firstly, the word 'routine' needs to be used properly. :) EVERY night! I love Decleor but that cleanser will not get rid of blackheads. Its water based and is for radiance and glow. Use an oil cleanser. Oil of Olay is not helping. What can you afford for moisturiser?
Sorry I just checked your reply. I might be too late. Yes I.will definitely try to do my skincsre routine daily. Nothing too pricey in the way of moisturiser ,im afraid. What are my best low cost options? And what cleanser would you recommend for me?
I am cleansing, toning and moisturizing etc (Perricone, Alpha-H and Sarah Chapman) pretty consistently, but a lot of stress, and the recent death of my father have left my skin a bit lackluster, to say the least!
I would like to start having a regular monthly facial , can you recommend a couple of people in central London? Budget £80-100.
Fern Clinic in Primrose Hill. Worth the trip. Tell them I sent you. Or Suti in Barnes. Both have been blogged about on here before. Suzannah from Suti will take care of you emotion-wise as well - she's a qualified healer. Both brilliant. You may want to also invest in a balm for evenings. As above Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm or Darphin and Decleor Balms are genius also. Wish you the best.
Hello Caroline, have nothing to post just yet - but wanted to say how much I love beautymouth. Your wit and style shine through - not to mention your insightful and helpful articles. Will also enjoy reading the Q and As !! MJ
im 18 and have always had bad skin, it's oily, very sensitive and gets bad acne breakouts which can be very painful. I have tried so many products but nothing has worked for me. 2. How does one use topical retinods? I use Differin gel 0.1% but I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to use it before/with/after moisturiser at night! Currently, I just mix it in with my moisturiser.
Thanks alot!
1. Cleansing oils absolutely - just non-mineral oil ones. I love oil as a MU remover.
Delete2. Retinoids - before moisturiser or instead of - although that depends on your skin type because it can dry you out.
But before - moisturiser on top.
Hi I love this idea!
ReplyDelete1.
THANKS!
Good morning Beauty Mouth
ReplyDeletelove your common sense, my skin is very dehydrated at the moment.I have combination skin i am using clarins hydroquench serum, but the hydroquench cream i am using is not working skin still feels tight.Any suggestions for a cream or lotion to take away the tightness, not to thick need to apply make-up joy x
How are you washing your face? Those are good products. They should not leave you tight. If you're tight you're probably dry in areas as opposed to dehydrated.
DeleteWhy do you say you are combination? More details please! :)

Hi Beauty Mouth, love the blog!
ReplyDeleteI know its friday so i'm not expecting an answer soon but wondered if you could please advise.
Anna x
Supplements - Floradix is brilliant.
DeleteAnd I would say give yourself a real break at night and use something like Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm which is my go-to when I just want to collapse.
Hello
ReplyDeleteI'm 32 years old with combination skin, lots of blackheads and large pores on my cheeks and nose.
DeleteI love Decleor but that cleanser will not get rid of blackheads.
DeleteHi Caroline,
ReplyDeleteI am cleansing, toning and moisturizing etc (Perricone, Alpha-H and Sarah Chapman) pretty consistently, but a lot of stress, and the recent death of my father have left my skin a bit lackluster, to say the least!
I would like to start having a regular monthly facial , can you recommend a couple of people in central London? Budget £80-100.
Thank you
Karen
Fern Clinic in Primrose Hill. Worth the trip. Tell them I sent you. Or Suti in Barnes. Both have been blogged about on here before. Suzannah from Suti will take care of you emotion-wise as well - she's a qualified healer.
DeleteBoth brilliant.
MJ
